What Satellite Imagery Tells Us About Methane Emissions in Greenland. Earth.Org analysed satellite data to assess the concentration of methane emissions in the Greenland ice sheet (GiS) in July 2019. The GiS covers an area of roughly 1,7million square km; together with Antarctica’s ice sheet, it contains more than 99% of the world’s fresh water. Most of this water is frozen in masses of snow and ice and as greenhouse gases build, the oceans absorb 93% of the excess heat those gases trap.

  • Climate response to the meltwater runoff from Greenland ice

Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) might have lost a large amount of its volume during the last interglacial and may do so again in the future due to climate warming. In this study, we test whether the climate response to the glacial meltwater is sensitive to its discharging location. Two fully coupled atmosphere–ocean general circulation models, CM2G and CM2M, which have completely different ocean

  • Greenland Ice Sheet Today | Surface Melt Data presented by NSIDC

Overview of ConditionsConditions in ContextAcknowledgementsSurface melting on the Greenland ice sheet ramped down at a near-normal pace in the weeks following the major melt event of early August (Figure 1). Only a few minor late-season melt events occurred in September and October. Overall, melting on the Greenland ice sheet for 2019 was the seventh-highest since 1978, behind 2012, 2010, 2016, 2002, 2007, and 2011 (Figure 2). Since 2000, the ice sheet has experienced a general increase in melting, with melt-day area for 2019 totaling 28.3 million square kilometers (10.9 million square miles) for the season. Melting was observed over nearly 90 percent of the island on at least one day, reaching the Summit Station and much of the high-altitude areas. It was particularly intense along the northern edge of the ice sheet, where compared to the 1981 to 2010 average, melting occurred for an additional 35 days. The number of days with melting was slightly above average along the western flank of the ice sheet as well, with about 15 to 20 more days...

The Last Interglacial climatic optimum, ca. 128 ka, is the most recent climate interval significantly warmer than present, providing an analogue (albeit imperfect) for ongoing global warming and the effects of Greenland Ice Sheet (GIS) melting on climate over the coming millennium. While some climate models predict an Atlantic meridional overturning circulation (AMOC) strengthening in response to GIS melting, others simulate weakening, leading to cooling in Europe.
