• Australian Renewable Energy Mapping Infrastructure Project

ScopeProject InnovationBenefitA large amount of mapping data and information relevant to the renewable energy industryis currently collected and housed by different agencies and institutions. However, there is no central source for this information and finding it can be time consuming and challenging. The Australian Renewable Energy Mapping Infrastructure Project will consolidate data currently housed by multiple organisations such as Geoscience Australia, the Bureau of Meteorology and CSIRO. The purpose of the AREMI project is to better inform energy supply and infrastructure investment decisions; reduce the time and costs associated with early stage project planning; and create opportunities for value adding analytical work within the public and private sectors. AREMI makes it easier for renewable energy projects to get off the ground in Australia. We provide a ‘one stop shop’ for all open geospatial data relevant to the energy sector stakeholders from government, industry and research. Energy project develope...

  • Renewable Energy Investment in Australia | Bulletin – March

IntroductionLarge-Scale Renewable Energy Generation InvestmentDrivers of InvestmentSmall-Scale Renewable Energy InvestmentRenewable Energy Grid IntegrationEnergy StorageInvestment OutlookInvestment in renewable energy generation has increased markedly in Australia over recent years, driven by a combination of factors including government policy incentives, elevated electricity prices and declining costs of renewable generation technology. This investment is contributing to a changing energy mix in Australia. Over the past decade, the share of electricity generation from renewable sources has increased steadily to be nearly 20 per cent in 2018 (Graph 1).This share was higher in 2019 and is expected to continue increasing as projects that are currently under construction or have been recently completed begin generating output. Investment in renewable energy generation is expected to moderate in the near term as some of the recent drivers unwind and because of challenges with integrating renewable energy sources into the electricity grid. However, over the longer term, the transition towards renewable energy generation is expected to continue as ageing coal-powered sta...

Economic BenefitsSocial BenefitsEnvironmental BenefitsA region, province or state (more generally an administrative unit) may benefit from exploiting and using RES through: 1. federal and state subsidies 2. lower energy bills 3. increase in foreign direct investment (FDI) 4. increase in real-estate value 5. increase in RES supplier revenues 6. decrease in dependency on energy imports 7. increase in security of energy supply 8. economic value of the entire supply chain involved in RES. The level of subsidies will determine RES investments and development. Federal and state subsidies can be simply mapped and do not need a derived parameter as an indicator (Figure 1). Lower energy bills resulting from use of RES can be indicated by comparison with average electricity and natural-gas prices across an administrative unit. Increase in FDI can be quantified either as a percentage of contribution of RES to the total FDI on all energy sources, and as a percentage of contribution to the gross domestic product (GDP). An indicator for the increase...

Sep 10, 2020 · Australia has introduced various policies to increase the cost of fossil fuel-generated electricity and to improve price competitiveness in the more expensive, low-carbon technologies, says Nazifi. These include the Renewable Energy Target scheme (launched in 1999 and amended several times since), a Carbon Pricing Mechanism (2012-2014), Direct Action (launched 2014), and the Emission Reduction Fund more recently.
